League basics
In the League there are 5 match days per year. Usually we play one Sunday per month from November through May (see match dates). All matches are played in Utrecht. We do play in accordance with the latest official rules of play with a few amendments (see rules of play).

Match days 1 - 5 for women, men and mixed
The rules regarding levels have been simplified this year.
As usual, every team registers at one of the levels A, B or C. These levels are divided in subgroups (sublevels) of 4 or 5 teams. After every match day the winner of the group is promoted to the next higher group and the team who ended last moves one sublevel down. In theory, a team can be promoted from C-level, via B, to the A-level or vice versa. The number 1 team in A can obviously not be promoted, nor can the last team in C be degraded. For the women a similar system applies, albeit on a smaller scale. If there is a shortage of complete groups, the organisation may decide to combine groups.

Ranking order
Decisive aspects to determine the team ranking order within a group are (in order of importance):

  • match points won
  • match points lost
  • number of setpoints won
  • number of setpoints lost
  • set balance
  • chance

Unfinished matches
In principle, at 18.00 hrs (6 pm) all active matches are stopped, however do continue until the sports hall caretaker or one of the organisers request you to interrupt the match, because there may be an option to extend the playing time with another 30 minutes. If a match is stopped mid-way, the scores at that moment must be registered on the results form. The organisers will determine whether or not the match will be completed on the next match day, which it certainly will if the match is decisive for promotion/degradation. If at the start of the match it is clear that it cannot be played completely due to lack of time, the playing teams can decide among themselves how the result will be judged. E.g. the match will be played until 18.00 hrs and the scores at that point will determine the final scores, e.g. 2-1 or 3-0. Always make a note of this agreement on the results form!

Absence of teams
The team that registered for the league must play the matches. If a team has less than 6 players, participants can be borrowed from other teams. A team that doesn't show up will be fined EUR 30,00 and has lost the match with 2x 25-0. The idea behind this is that everyone has payed and counts on playing volleyball. The absent team eliminates this expectation and disappoints the other teams.
